Once Yahoo Site Explorer went away, I went searching for the best possible alternative to their service.   Fortunately I came upon the SEOMOZ Open Site Explorer project rather quickly and found that it was able to fill a nice gap in the backlink checking tool market.

Their interface is quite nice and works very similar to a regular search engine, with a nice and simplistic layout, straight and to the point.  They claim to have nearly 40 billion URLs indƒexed.

There are some features that I really like with this interface that make it stand out amongst the competition.  Some of those features include the following:

  1. Listing of Inbound Links (Backlinks of course!)
  2. Title, URL of linking page, & Anchor Text
  3. Page Authority & Domain Authority
  4. Top Pages on site with authority info and social media (Google +1, Tweets, FB Shares)
  5. Top Inbound Linking Domains
  6. Top Anchor Text Used
  7. 5 Site Comparisons

Basically this tool takes off where Yahoo Site Explorer never did, and then adds a TON of awesome features that to many could be invaluable in their SEO marketing arsenal.  A lot of the content is free, but to get access to even more goods, you’ll need to pay for Pro level account on their system.    To put it mildly: it’s the cat’s meow!

They even take it a step further and allow you to create some very advanced reports with custom filtering and knobs, then allowing you to export the entire report into a CSV file.  What more could you ask for?  If there’s  a backlink feature you need, chances are they have thought of it.

There is a fair bit of eye candy available with graphs and charts.  The tabs are well laid out so that you can quickly find what you are looking for, and it is one of the cleanest interfaces available in the Site Explorer Alternative lineup.  Here is a snapshot of the tabs available and the breakdown by TLD on incoming backlink domains.

The PRO level account costs $99/month and comes with a free 30 day trial.  Some of the features available in the PRO account include the following:

  1. Unlimited Reports
  2. View 10K backlinks
  3. Track Links Over Time
  4. View Social Media Backlinks

Most of these features you would have never found in Yahoo’s Site Explorer, so in a way I’m glad it went away so that I could have a reason to go out and hunt for better alternatives!

There is a nice little video intro if you want to see what it is all about.
